Poster Project

So this is my project:

It is a poster for the band GWAR in the art nueveau style. I liked the contrast between the art style and the style of GWAR. GWAR is well known for their 80's monster movie aesthetic and their less than appropriate stage show. The writing is in french and mostly to be a place holder.

I started by tracing out the lead singer. I then created the background graphic with a combination of circles and copy pasting. I then assembled everything together with the rectangles. To create the text graphic I traced around an image of the band logo, and replaced the text with an art nueveau font.

  1. this poster looks nice. i like the color scheme you picked, especially the color that surrounds the band's name. it gives it and the text a rather ominous feeling. i also like how you used those symbols that surround the lead singer, it gives it a 3D feel. and while the french text at the bottom looks good, i do wish that it was in english so that we could read it. i also think the blue background in the circle doesn't really match up with the pinkish background, but meh, i'm throwing stones here.

you did a great job with this one!

  2. Very nice design and colors, everything is balanced really well. Only thing I could nit pick is that the font on the bottom is a bit obnoxious and the text on the left seems squished.

  3. The font on the bottom left is suffocating a little bit and just seems too squeezed together. It doesn’t really give off the feeling of a band for some reason. I think the whole design layout of it is very good. The fonts are a bit hard to read but almost appear to be fitting to this style of poster.

  4. Great design. I like the colors you used. The font to me is a little hard to read and the text feels a bit cluttered.

  5. The main font needs to be fixed because I need a second to de-sypher the G and I don't really know the band but maybe the colors could be a little bit darker. Other than that it looks great!

  7. This poster has the strong focial point. It works really well. Your color choice has same tone as the last one I think. Having a paticular style should be essential for desingers but the style should go along with the context. Actually I am not sure what I want to talk about. ^^

  8. The design is great but the text is very difficult to read. I would also consider removing the orange frame.

  9. I LOVE THIS POSTER! It has the right contrasting colors and has the description in their own separate spots to easily read. The only problem I have is the G. But great job, man.

  10. This color scheme looks fantastic! Great work with that. My main issue lies in that the bottom text is a bit difficult to read, I like the font - it gives the poster an older feeling to it - but that doesn't make it any easier to read. Other than that, I don't know what else I can critique. Good job.

  11. Thanks for your written explanation which gives us some bachground on your decision making and process. I think the concept is fun and interesting. It gives the art nouveau style (which can seem superficially beautiful at times) more of a bite, or just more of a content and purpose. In the end, I am glad you chose to stay true to an art nouveau palette. The colors you chose really speak to that, and the fact that there is a differently toned palette for the lead singer brings us to a focal point in the composition where we ask ourselves, is this something different? The way the design descends into space, getting smaller and smaller also helps create this focal point. I find it interesting that because of this control, the textual area (which usually dominates) is secondary to the image. The coloring of the text and it’s background (much less contrast), along with the script of the text (more ornate-harder to read immediately) helps this too. I think the background shapes and layout are really strong, too. Some things to improve. The lead signer seems a little crooked within the circle. I would rotate him very slightly towards the left so that he is centered with the white rectangle that runs vertically down the composition. In the same area, the circles that descend into space and become dots stop at a certain point and we see a field of blue. This becomes distracting right under his arm. Perhaps moving him over (again, centering him) would help conceal this, and you could also continue the dots further so they don’t appear to stop.

  12. The color for this fits perfect. The text is interesting and works well. Just "G" doesn't really look like a "G" maybe use a different type of text that similar to the others. Also the circles that get smaller in the circle there is empty space that could be fill more with more smaller circles. Other than that this really good and it works well even the text that's in a different language works well to fill that space.

  13. Love it. Love the choice of band. This poster is very balanced. I understand why the french text was used as a place holder, but seems kind of needless if it's not conveying any sort of message. I like the posterized effect of Odorus' cutout. I've seen this band multiple times so I understand that "less than appropriate' stage presence. This came out really cool.

    1. Added Note: the bottom text is a little harder for me to read. Perhaps a different size or font

  15. This is incredible! This is well designed and perfect to put in a concert. If there is anything to criticize, I think the colors. When I think a GWAR, I mostly think of a dark or sinister design. But still, this is fantastic.
